Since 1624 Taiwanese – Dutch Connections
Since 1624 is a book about centuries of connections between Taiwan and the
Netherlands. In 1624 Dutch pioneers set foot on Formosa and familiarized themselves
with its people. Reverend and merchant had led the way, naval guns and firearms had
cleared it. It was not an easy acquaintance. Half a globe revealed a world of differences.
Taiwan and the Netherlands would continue to meet in the following centuries.
Differences became visible, but also common ground and similarities. This book
describes some of those encounters. From the very beginning to the present day.
A group of international authors shows how two places on Earth became connected,
marveled at each other, and learned from each other. Twenty-five stories give a unique
view of long-term connections from a Taiwanese and Dutch perspective.
From Christianization to computer chips and from camphor wood and ethnic Siraya
plants to modern architecture and coastal defense. The contributions are grouped
around three themes: Water & Land, Culture, Language & People, and Business & Trade.
